VIN
The 17-character vehicle identification number used to register and search motor vehicles on the PPSR.
Registering a hire vehicle or financed vehicle by its VIN means any later buyer doing a $2 serial-number search sees the interest, which is what protects the owner against a sale by the hirer. Chassis numbers are used for vehicles without a VIN.
